90 Drive (2011) tt0780504 Feb 01 2017, 03:45 A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong. It does not do much, but it assembles the parts so nicely. This is a film that can be called "art" as much as a painting.

(imdb) Great buddy action/comedy; some of the dialogue really cracked me up. By far the most annoying part was Paula Patton's performance.
70 After Hours (1985) tt0088680 Feb 03 2017, 06:56 Paul meets Marcy at a coffee shop after work, and gets her phone number. He calls her, she asks him to come over (imdb) The beginning is enjoyable and full of opportunities. Then towards the end it gets a bit too much. It came to my mind that this film is truly Kafkaesque: 'a greater force that subdues the protagonist beyond his control'. Pretty neat, but I don't need to rewatch.
70 Angst (1983) tt0165623 Feb 27 2017, 08:45 A man is released from prison after serving four years for murdering an elderly woman. He quickly begins to feel the compulsion to kill again. He then begins to take out his sadistic pleasures on them, attempting to hold them hostage, while thinking of his troubled childhood with his abusive mother and grandmother... (imdb) Unique little film. The director does not shy away from empathizing with a sadistic killer; the score is well done, and the protagonist is very good.
70 Arrival (2016) tt2543164 Feb 02 2017, 17:57 Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. 70 Batman Begins (2005) tt0372784 Feb 11 2017, 06:49 Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. (Warner Bros.) Massively entertaining hero action. The style is mainstream, but the small pieces like some dialogue lines add quite a bit of humour and originality.
70 The Best of Youth (2003) tt0346336 Feb 25 2018, 14:33 Spanning four decades, from the chaotic 1960s to the present, this passionate epic follows two Italian brothers through some of the most tumultuous events of recent Italian history. (Miramax) Six months after watching this, I still remember some of the vivid scenes. Some parts were dragging along, other parts were great. A very naturalistic film.

He enlists the help of his bowling buddy, Walter, a gun-toting Jewish-convert with anger issues. Deception leads to more trouble, and it soon seems that everyone from porn empire tycoons to nihilists want something from The Dude. 70 Black Mirror (2011) tt2085059 Feb 02 2017, 17:41 A TV series that explores modern life and it's attachment to technology in bizarre ways. But when his other friend, who works as a bodyguard for a supermodel, is wounded, Jack decides to step in for him. Now he must confront his fear and the assassin, who seems to be well aware of Jack's problem (imdb) It's almost hilarious at times, and the suspense is constructed very well. The best Woo film.
70 Blade Runner (1982) tt0083658 Feb 02 2017, 06:40 Harrison Ford stars as former detective Rick Deckard who is on the hunt for "replicants," androids, attempting to pass as humans in technogrunge 2019 Los Angeles. The scenery is great, futuristic and mysterious. After the introduction, things get a bit sketchy and there is too much time spent with the wrong things. -- (watched International aka Criterion version)
70 Blade Runner 2049 (2017) tt1856101 Jan 14 2018, 07:28 Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. (imdb) A nice experience, which is a bit too overburdened with obligations to the first Blade Runner. I loved the first steps into this great new world, but the ending was rather weak.

With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. Das Boot is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served. (Sony Pictures) Excellent grounded atmosphere and frightening use of sound/silence. Also outstanding work by the actors.

This is how you should make a movie. Please watch it if you have any interest in "behind the scenes" material.
70 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) tt0064115 Feb 01 2017, 15:09 Two Western bank/train robbers flee to Bolivia when the law gets too close. (imdb) A good western, with likeable protagonists. Features the slow tension of being tracked down by a masterful foe.
70 Children of Men (2006) tt0206634 Feb 02 2017, 17:39 In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have become somehow infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea. It starts slow. But there is a scene that is so beautiful and stunning and heartwarming, it must be a genius who put it to life.
70 Chinatown (1974) tt0071315 Feb 01 2017, 15:22 Jack Nicholson is private-eye Jake Gittes, living off the murky moral climate of sunbaked, pre-war Southern California. Hired by a beautiful socialite to investigate her husband's extramarital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together for one, unforgettable night in Chinatown. It is a demanding detective film. Nicholson is great in this one, so is the design and atmosphere.
70 A Clockwork Orange (1971) tt0066921 Feb 11 2017, 04:29 A savage and satiric morality play centering on Alex, who fights, robs, rapes and kills like any conscienceless predator. Captured and imprisoned, he undergoes treatment to condition him "safe", a "clockwork orange" healthy and whole on the outside - but crippled within by reflex mechanisms beyond his control. Good atmosphere and design. The protagonist fits very well, also the score is great.
70 The Color of Money (1986) tt0090863 Feb 19 2018, 16:39 A former pool player returns to the game and takes on a young protege. (imdb) Good old Scorsese magic.

70 The Darjeeling Limited (2007) tt0838221 May 07 2017, 05:24 Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be. Their "spiritual quest", however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins. (Fox Searchlight) It's amazing how Wes Anderson just tells an honest and emotional story, without any cynicism or trapdoors, and gets away with it.
70 The Dark Knight Rises (2012) tt1345836 Feb 12 2017, 10:23 Eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face's crimes, a new terrorist leader, Bane overwhelms Gotham's finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that brands him an enemy. It has some lengths and - like before - the very normalized style. But the story has more gravity and the ending is quite emotional. There are also many faithful references to the first and second film.
70 Die Hard (1988) tt0095016 Feb 06 2017, 19:56 New York cop John McClane gives terrorists a dose of their own medicine as they hold hostages in an LA office building. (imdb) The protagonist carries the movie as well as any challenge that is thrown at him. I like the concept of infiltrating a skyscraper.
70 Donnie Darko (2001) tt0246578 Mar 07 2017, 16:08 A genre-busting fable that blasts the American suburban drama into a wildly imaginative realm of time travel, alternative universes and the manipulation of one's fate. I liked it; it had authentic moments but also imaginative ideas. You can't go wrong with this one.
70 Dredd (2012) tt1343727 Jan 20 2018, 11:54 In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. (imdb) Love it. This is why action movies will never die.
70 Entourage (2004) tt0387199 May 28 2017, 10:50 Film star Vince Chase navigates the vapid terrain of Los Angeles with a close circle of friends and his trusty agent. It's very easy to burn through the series in a few days. Light and enjoyable fun. (watched a few years ago)
70 Evil Dead (2013) tt1288558 Mar 23 2017, 12:21 Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival. (imdb) I think it does a very good job as a modern The Evil Dead. It is nice to see some more of the book, as well as excessive brutality.
70 Exiled (2006) tt0796212 Feb 11 2018, 12:38 Set just around the time of Macau's reversion to the Chinese government, it concerns a group of hit men who come together when their boss orders a hit on one of them... Billed as 'the world's first street art disaster movie' the film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work. (imdb) Interesting documentary about an unworthy camera guy who stumbles into the world of street art, and in the process captures incredibly rare footage.
70 Face/Off (1997) tt0119094 Feb 02 2017, 08:59 FBI agent Sean Archer knows how to stop elusive terrorist Castor Troy. He'll become him. Archer undergoes a futuristic surgery and has Troy's face mapped onto his, then infiltrates the terrorist's world to discover his deadly secrets. Great movie with an epic feel to it. The fight good vs evil carries the viewer along. Both main characters are well made - I think it's Cage's best performance.
70 Fallen (1998) tt0119099 Feb 17 2017, 19:19 Homicide detective John Hobbes witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese. Soon after the execution the killings start again, and they are very similar to Reese's style. (imdb) Surprisingly great. Decent, bizarre story and a handful of the best side characters you can get. The ending is just baffling.
70 Falling Down (1993) tt0106856 Feb 02 2017, 07:02 An unemployed defence worker frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society, begins to psychotically and violently lash out against them. 70 Fargo (1996) tt0116282 Feb 01 2017, 06:55 Jerry's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of pregnant Marge Gunderson. It's alright, although it drags sometimes. But great setting and score. Also good characters.
70 From Russia with Love (1963) tt0057076 Feb 17 2018, 04:12 Agent 007 is sent into Turkey to confiscate an encryption device which is actually a trap for him contrived by SPECTRE. An almost perfect spy film. The pieces fit together very nicely - although there is an occasional sketchy moment -, and Sean Connery carries the film all the way through.
70 Fury (2014) tt2713180 Jul 20 2017, 14:27 April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and out-gunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. (imdb) Polished, gruesome and interesting war film. Quite exciting to see the group of protagonists move out into unknown territory. - Shia LaBeouf is great, the tank battles are nice and (!) the german dialogue is on point. That is enough to forgive a few "quirks" of the story.
70 The Game (1997) tt0119174 Feb 06 2017, 05:25 Wealthy financier Nicholas Van Orton gets a strange birthday present from wayward brother Conrad: a live-action game that consumes his life. It starts calmly and then escalates. Watch it once, then it's pretty great.

It's 1863 and lower Manhattan is run by gangs, the most powerful of which is the Natives, headed by Bill "The Butcher" Cutting. He believes that America should belong to native-born Americans and opposes the waves of immigrants, mostly Irish, entering the city. (imdb) The intro is truly special and memorable. After that the story slows down a lot, but you still want to see what happens next.
70 The Ghost Writer (2010) tt1139328 Feb 01 2017, 04:15 A ghostwriter hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister uncovers secrets that put his own life in risk. Good protagonist, really nice visuals and feeling. Watching once is enough.

When a hotshot executive from the head office arrives and proposes a vicious sales contest, competition gets stiff, and salesmen who have worked a lifetime for the company find their jobs in jeopardy. (Artisan) Dense "classical drama" on screen. Theatrical performances and dialogue, with the typical dramatic tension "triangle". Refreshing mind exercise.
70 The Godfather (1972) tt0068646 Feb 01 2017, 06:32 Francis Ford Coppola's epic features Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged... (Paramount Pictures) The feeling and style of this is enchanting. A good movie on any standard.
70 Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (2015) tt4257858 Mar 02 2018, 06:54 An in-depth look at the inner-workings of the Church of Scientology. (imdb) The essential Scientology documentary.
70 Green Room (2016) tt4062536 Mar 13 2017, 13:08 A young punk rock band find themselves trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon a horrific act of violence. (imdb) In the beginning, it's extremely suspenseful, but then it decreases moderately - in the middle/end, almost feels too long. I'm missing a key moment of brilliance. But to be fair, Saulnier nailed the final shot again (and this shot "unlocks" the whole film).
70 Grindhouse (2007) tt0462322 Feb 02 2017, 15:13 A double-bill of thrillers that recall both filmmakers' favorite exploitation films. "Grindhouse" (a downtown movie theater in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies) is presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. (imdb) This one is a unique, exciting experience. Part 1 is a fucking badass action slaughterfest. Part 2 is quite an anticlimax to that; a lone antagonist is roaming the streets. - The cinema simulation is well done and the trailers are hilarious.
70 The Gunfighter (1950) tt0042531 May 27 2017, 04:51 Notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo rides into town to find his true love, who doesn't want to see him. But the maid has a secret. She and a swindler who poses as a Japanese Count are scheming to get the Lady engaged, rob her fortune, and lock her up in a madhouse. All proceeds according to plan until Sookee starts to truly understand Hideko. (imdb) It started extremely strong - to a point where I actually got excited -, but then it got convoluted in its own plot. One twist too many.
70 Hardcore Henry (2016) tt3072482 Feb 21 2017, 15:16 Henry, a newly resurrected cyborg who must save his wife/creator from the clutches of a psychotic tyrant with telekinetic powers, AKAN, and his army of mercenaries. Fighting alongside Henry is Jimmy, who is Henry's only hope to make it through the day. Hardcore takes place over the course of one day, in Moscow, Russia. (imdb) Visionary ego-shooter action. The humour and score are cheesy, in contrast the action is brutal and epic.

The powerhouse actors play tough New Yorkers who must outwit one another to protect competing interests in this skillfully penned and tightly helmed thriller. Cool protagonist; average plot with some nice surprises.
70 Interstellar (2014) tt0816692 Feb 01 2017, 03:50 A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage. (imdb) Some great things happen here, but the constant music and a slight feeling of non-science ("love goes beyond time and space"??) were a bit annoying.
70 Irreversible (2002) tt0290673 Mar 27 2017, 16:16 Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order. The first few minutes made me nauseous, so that I could not bare to watch the screen: a thrilling and frightening experience. - Note: Pierre is an annoying dumbass.

70 Match Point (2005) tt0416320 Feb 03 2017, 08:05 Match Point is a drama about ambition and obsession, the seduction of wealth, and the often discordant relationship between love and sexual passion. Perhaps most importantly, however, the story reveals the huge part luck plays in the events of our lives, refuting the comforting misconception that more of life is under our control than really is. (Dream Works Pictures) Great film, down-to-earth but it gets twisted, with nice acting. The ending is memorable even 2 years later.

In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Four more films would follow. In this personal documentary, Herzog traces the often violent up and downs of their relationship, revisiting Munich apartment where they first met - and thrashed, and the various locations of their films. (tiff.net) This was most rewarding because I did not know a single thing or keyword about the film. Therefore, I can do no more than recommend this confident, radiant gem of a movie.
70 Point Break (1991) tt0102685 Mar 15 2017, 11:36 An FBI agent goes undercover to catch a gang of bank robbers who may be surfers. (imdb) Ah, I remember this one instantly. An intelligent and sometimes spiritual heist film.
70 Prisoners (2013) tt1392214 Feb 03 2017, 00:02 When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family? The style is cold; the protagonists have a genuine struggle. Fantastic Gyllenhaal performance.
70 Rounders (1998) tt0128442 Jul 17 2017, 11:21 A story of passion, risk, and the extreme price of friendship in the world of high-stakes poker. (Miramax) Good, blazing, fun poker film.
70 A Scanner Darkly (2006) tt0405296 Mar 14 2017, 15:50 Based on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick's own experiences, A Scanner Darkly tells the darkly comedic, caustic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process -- a method known as interpolated rotoscoping, first employed in writer/director Richard Linklater's 2001 film "Waking Life" -- to create a haunting version of America, seven years from now. (Warner Independent Pictures) Really, really slick optics.
70 Seconds (1966) tt0060955 Mar 21 2017, 07:44 An aging, tired businessman becomes involved with a mysterious corporation which promises to rejuvenate him and totally transform his life, for a price. I was pleasantly surprised that this is not a boring, prudish piece of black and white crap. Well done.
70 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) tt0111161 Feb 11 2017, 04:20 Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner. (imdb) Good, emotional film about humanity and hope under bad conditions.
70 The Shining (1980) tt0081505 Feb 01 2017, 04:10 An abusive husband, his wife and their psychic son take care of a haunted hotel over the winter, but the isolation becomes too much pressure The tension is built well, and the architecture is presented nicely. Other than that, not special or exceptional.
70 Silence (2016) tt0490215 Mar 06 2017, 05:51 In the seventeenth century, two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and propagate Christianity. (imdb) Not suitable for a general audience (about 10 people walked out of the cinema). It moves very, very slowly and you must have a strong will to sit through it. But this is a type of film that is rare today; and I was one of the few to enjoy it somewhat.
70 The Silence of the Lambs (1991) tt0102926 Feb 03 2017, 01:54 Young FBI agent Clarice Starling is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who skins his victims. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that Lecter who is also a very powerful and clever mind manipulator have the answers to their questions to help locate the killer. Clarice must first try and gain Lecter's confidence before he is to give away any information. (imdb) Interesting and gruesome antagonist. The atmosphere can be terrifying and sickening.
70 Sin City (2005) tt0401792 Feb 01 2017, 03:46 Four tales of crime focusing around a muscular brute who's looking for the person responsible for the death of his beloved Goldie; a man fed up with Sin City's corrupt law enforcement who takes the law into his own hands after a horrible mistake; a cop who risks his life to protect a girl from a deformed pedophile; and a hitman looking to make a little cash. Cool stuff, with a great visual style.

70 Starship Troopers (1997) tt0120201 Feb 09 2017, 11:20 From the bridge of the Fleet Battlestation Ticonderoga, with its sweeping galactic views, to the desolate terrain of planet Klendathu, teeming with shrieking, fire-spitting, brain-sucking special effects creatures, acclaimed director Paul Verhoven crafts a dazzling epic based on Robert A. Heinlein's classic sci-fi adventure. Courageous soldiers travel to the distant and desolate Klendathu system for the ultimate showdown between the species. (Sony) Good, frightening war film in space. The enemy design is just gross enough that you don't feel bad about them being slaughtered. Overall pretty good.
70 Straight Time (1978) tt0078326 Mar 19 2017, 07:41 After being released on parole, a burglar attempts to go straight, get a regular job, and just go by the rules. He soon finds himself back in jail at the hands of a power-hungry parole officer. When he is released again, he assaults the parole officer, steals his car, and returns to a life of crime. (imdb) Drama with a very authentic vibe. In fact, so authentic that you can sometimes hear the footsteps of the camera man. Dustin Hoffman is quite good and lifelike.
70 Stranger Than Fiction (2006) tt0420223 Mar 15 2017, 17:13 Will Ferrell plays Harold Crick, an IRS Agent whose world is turned upside-down when he begins to hear his life being chronicled by a narrator only he can hear. The Narrator, Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson), a nearly forgotten author of tragic novels, is struggling to complete her latest and best book, unaware that her protagonist is alive and uncontrollably guided by her words. Fiction and reality collide when the bewildered and hilariously resistant Harold hears the Narrator say that events have been set in motion that will lead to his imminent death. (Sony) Engaging idea. A more sophisticated type of film.
70 Take Shelter (2011) tt1675192 Feb 02 2017, 18:58 Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself. (imdb) Good and frightening, with a great protagonist.
70 There Will Be Blood (2007) tt0469494 Feb 03 2017, 00:49 A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business. Sure, a great Day-Lewis performance, and a great visual style. I wish every film could do a bit of what was done here on the photography. But it loses pace later; you will ask yourself "was that it?".
70 Thunderball (1965) tt0059800 Feb 11 2018, 15:38 James Bond heads to The Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by SPECTRE agent Emilio Largo in an international extortion scheme. A clunky but very enjoyable Bond adventure.
70 The Train (1964) tt0059825 Feb 19 2018, 13:38 In 1944, a German colonel loads a train with French art treasures to send to Germany. The Resistance must stop it without damaging the cargo. (imdb) Not as good as I expected. Still a good, vigorous movie; especially impressed by the smart characters on both sides. There are no brainless henchmen, which makes it rather intense at times.
70 True Detective (2014) tt2356777 Feb 06 2017, 08:39 An anthology series in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law. (imdb) It is enjoyable and captivating, even with the slow, slow pacing. - In series 1, many of great moments were had in the first two episodes, and then the momentum decreased massively; for the sake of reverse introduction. - Series 2 is linear, with good protagonists; also with lots of filler; it was probably a bad idea to make it less mysterious. -- Both series have great style and score, the first stuck with me longer.
70 The Untouchables (1987) tt0094226 Feb 01 2017, 02:51 Federal Agent Elliot Ness sets out to take out Al Capone; because of rampant corruption, he assembles a small, hand-picked team. (imdb) It is good, but something is missing. Standard movie except setting and some nice scenes.
70 Vanilla Sky (2001) tt0259711 Jul 18 2017, 06:58 Snowboarding through life, David Aames (Cruise) appears to lead a charmed life. In one night David meets a girl of his dreams and loses her by making a small mistake. Thrust unexpectedly onto a roller-coaster ride of romance, comedy, suspicion, love, sex and dreams, David finds himself on a mind-bending search for his soul and discovers the precious, ephemeral nature of true love. (Paramount Pictures) A film that effectively sucks you in. At the end, I was left questioning everything.
70 The Wrestler (2008) tt1125849 Feb 06 2017, 05:35 A drama centered on retired professional wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Rourke) as he makes his way through the independent circuit, trying to get back in the game for one final showdown with his former rival. (imdb) Interesting stuff. The protagonist does a great job at selling the story.
60 11:14 (2003) tt0331811 Jul 16 2017, 16:23 11:14 tells the seemingly random yet vitally connected story of a set of incidents that all converge one evening at 11:14pm. It's a sort of musical chairs with a corpse, with the structurally intriguing storytelling style of "Memento" and "Run Lola Run." (Media 8 Entertainment) Pretty good dark comedy/"mystery", ties together nicely at the end. Some downright hilarious moments.
60 12 Monkeys (1995) tt0114746 Feb 16 2017, 13:06 Between sanity and madness, fantasy and reality, the past and the future, comes an adventure beyond imagination from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of "The Fisher King." Penal colony prisoner James Cole (Willis) must travel back in time from the year 2035 to find the cause of a virus that killed five billion people in 1997. (Universal) Pretty good, but also unsatisfying.
60 25th Hour (2002) tt0307901 Jul 17 2017, 16:25 The 25th Hour depicts the last day of freedom for a young man before he begins serving a seven-year jail term for drug dealing. Prowling through the city until dawn with his two close male friends and his girlfriend, he is forced to re-examine his life and how he got himself into his predicament, which leads to a shocking, disturbing finale. (imdb) The greatest trick Spike Lee ever pulled, was making me expect a great reveal at the end of this film. Nonetheless, the ride was quite enjoyable.
60 The 47 Ronin (1941) tt0033654 Aug 09 2017, 10:50 Lord Asano resists a bribery attempt by a member of the Shogun's court. His honesty, however, is useless against the corruption of the administration... (imdb) It was strangely intriguing for a long time, but then the film made the unacceptable decision to *not* show the central event that the characters were working towards. - Very unsatisfying, but overall still recommended.
60 The Accountant (2001) tt0222675 Feb 13 2017, 14:59 The Accountant, the 2001 Academy Award Winning ® Best Action Live Short film, tells the story of a mysterious accountant whose remarkable mathematical skills just might save the O’Dell family farm. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago. (imdb) It's alright, but has only a few short moments of greatness.
60 Alien (1979) tt0078748 Feb 24 2017, 13:49 After a space merchant vessel perceives an unknown transmission as distress call, its landing on the source moon finds one of the crew attacked by a mysterious life-form, and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun. Nice atmosphere at the beginning, and some shocking moments. But I found it not very gripping, especially in the middle.
60 American Beauty (1999) tt0169547 Feb 06 2017, 08:26 Provoked by forbidden passions, Lester Burnham (Spacey) decides to make a few changes in his rut of a life, changes that are less midlife crisis than adolescence reborn. The freer he gets, the happier he gets, which is even more maddening to his wife, Carolyn (Bening), and daughter Jane (Birch) --especially when he turns his lustful gaze toward Jane's friend, the sultry Angela (Suvari). (Dreamworks SKG) Relatable protagonist. The story was quite intriguing, but the ending is just the result of awfully convenient and stupid moments.
60 The American (2010) tt1440728 Feb 01 2017, 02:46 An assassin hides out in Italy for one last assignment. Slow moving, but it has some nice scenes and a good protagonist.
60 Apocalypto (2006) tt0472043 Feb 03 2017, 02:08 A heart stopping mythic action-adventure set against the turbulent end times of the once great Mayan civilization. Epic proportions, with authenticity. The protagonist goes through a hell where it's "eat or be eaten".
60 The Aviator (2004) tt0338751 Feb 03 2017, 07:15 A biographical chronicle which charts the early years of famous tycoon, Howard Hughes, whose eclectic career spanned across everything from oil, to film, casinos, and aviation. Appealing style, and a great protagonist. The Hepburn character was very annoying; but all other things were pretty good. It's long but it keeps you entertained.
60 Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009) tt1095217 Feb 09 2017, 05:15 A rogue detective is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs - while playing fast and loose with the law. The visuals and score are weird, a bit too stylized for my taste, and there are some boring scenes. But Nicolas Cage is a fun protagonist.
60 Before Sunrise (1995) tt0112471 Feb 25 2018, 14:28 A French grad student named Celine (Julie Delpy) meets an American boy named Jesse (Ethan Hawke) on the Budapest-Vienna train. They get off the train in Vienna and hang out for a while. It was okay. The two actors are pretty good and there certainly is chemistry between them.
60 Being John Malkovich (1999) tt0120601 Feb 26 2018, 05:37 Craig, a puppeteer, takes a filing job in a low-ceilinged office in Manhattan. Although married to the slightly askew Lotte, he hits on a colleague, the sexually frank Maxine. She's bored but snaps awake when he finds a portal leading inside John Malkovich: for 15 minutes you see, hear, and feel whatever JM is doing, then you fall out by the New Jersey Turnpike... (imdb) This was insane, but charming at times.
60 Berserk (1997) tt0318871 Mar 07 2017, 11:30 Gatsu is a skilled swordsman who joins forces with a mercenary group named 'The Band of the Hawk', lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with them as they battle their way into the royal court. (imdb) Some moments are very memorable, but sadly it is ~10 episodes too long; focusing on an unlikeable side character was a big mistake. But the philosophical dialogues between the two main characters are fantastic and if you watch a second time, you will see a clear predestination. -- The final episodes are incredible.
60 Blood Diamond (2006) tt0450259 Feb 03 2017, 00:35 Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (DiCaprio), an ex-mercenary from Zimbabwe, and Solomon Vandy (Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond, the kind of stone that can transform a life... or end it. (Warner Bros.) A good and grim film on an epic scale. The terrifying feeling of the mines instantly comes to mind.
60 Blow Out (1981) tt0082085 Feb 21 2018, 13:39 A soundman accidentally records the evidence that proves a car "accident" was murder, and consequently finds himself in danger. (imdb) Good thriller, I guess. John Travolta is very good here.
60 Blow-Up (1966) tt0060176 Feb 12 2018, 14:55 A photographer who is talented but aimless has photographed violence and pain without feeling any involvement... (imdb) Interesting, almost like a stage piece, but only carried through by the good protagonist.
60 Blue Velvet (1986) tt0090756 Feb 17 2017, 06:26 Set in a small American town, Blue Velvet is a dark, sensuous mystery involving the intertwining lives of four very different individuals. The film's painful realism reminds us that we are not immune to the disturbing events which transpire in Blue Velvet's sleepy community. There is a darker side of life waiting for us all. (De Laurentiis Entertainment Group Inc.) Sensitive love story, but the mystery feels slapped on and unfitting.
60 Brick (2005) tt0393109 Jul 16 2017, 14:22 A teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. Very dense dialogue and a bright protagonist. Unfortunately, I could hardly understand some of the rambled lines, and the story is not that gripping.
60 Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) tt0071249 Aug 17 2017, 17:20 A family scandal causes a wealthy and powerful Mexican rancher to make the pronouncement -- Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia! (imdb) This film is a good, straightforward action flick; not boring, not too stylized, with a mean undertone.
60 Bringing Out the Dead (1999) tt0163988 Feb 23 2018, 15:05 Surrounded by the injured and the dying, EMS paramedic Frank is dwelling in an urban night-world, crumbling under the accumulated weight of too many years of saving and losing lives. The film follows Frank over the course of fifty-six hours in his life as he reaches the very brink of spiritual collapse and redemption. Psychedelic trip through life and death, with a good protagonist.
60 Caliber 9 (1972) tt0067429 Aug 26 2017, 17:25 Just out of prison, ex-con Ugo Piazza meets his former employer, a psychopathic gangster Rocco who enjoys sick violence and torture... (imdb) Groovy, violent gangster flick. Pretty good.
60 Casino (1995) tt0112641 Feb 02 2017, 13:16 This Martin Scorsese film depicts the Janus-like quality of Las Vegas--it has a glittering, glamorous face, as well as a brutal, cruel one. Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, mobsters who move to Las Vegas to make their mark, live and work in this paradoxical world. Seen through their eyes, each as a foil to the other, the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 1970's and '80's are revealed... (imdb) Sure had some good scenes, and good performers. But it's not better than 'good'.
60 Clockers (1995) tt0112688 Aug 17 2017, 07:53 Strike is a young city drug pusher under the tutelage of drug-lord Rodney Little, who, when not playing with model trains or drinking Moo for his ulcer, just likes to chill with his brothers near the benches outside the project houses. When a night man at a fast-food restaurant is found with four bullets in his body, Strike's older brother turns himself in as the killer... (imdb) It's good, but it takes a bit too long to get going. And I didn't like the lead actor.
60 Le Conseguenze dell'amore (2004) tt0398883 Feb 06 2017, 08:21 Titta di Girolamo apparently has a regular and tedious life with nothing strange a part from his own name (as he uses to say). He lives in a Hotel in Lugano (Switzerland) since almost ten years, spending his days waiting for something we don't know. His life is too rigid, too detached following a flat routine... (imdb) A quiet, contemplating film; the protagonist is very sensitive. The message of the boredom of life is universally understandable to every human.
60 Crank (2006) tt0479884 Feb 11 2018, 11:05 Chev Chelios (Statham) is about to begin his morning with an unexpected wake-up call. Groggy, practically unable to move and with a heart that's barely beating, he hears the voice of thug Ricky Verona, who reveals Chev has been poisoned in his sleep and only has an hour to live. As it turns out, Chev is a hit man who freelances for a major West Coast syndicate... (Lionsgate) Rampaging action film. Worth watching because it's fun.
60 The Dark Knight (2008) tt0468569 Feb 12 2017, 07:03 Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham's new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker's crimes grow more and more deadly. Takes more time to introduce the new characters, therefore less snappy than Batman Begins. But this effort leads to a great ending.
60 Darkman (1990) tt0099365 Feb 01 2017, 15:24 A hideously scarred and mentally unstable scientist seeks revenge against the crooks who made him like that. (imdb) A twisted protagonist makes this interesting to watch. It does many things better than your average hero movie.
60 Days of Heaven (1978) tt0077405 Feb 01 2017, 02:43 A hot-tempered farm laborer convinces the woman he loves to marry their rich but dying boss so that they can have a claim to his fortune (imdb) Sometimes beautiful, but also a lot of emptiness and boredom.
60 Dead Poets Society (1989) tt0097165 Mar 15 2017, 17:04 Painfully shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room-mate, Neil, although exceedingly bright and popular, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two, along with their other friends, meet Professor Keating, their new English teacher, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each, in their own way, does this, and are changed for life. (imdb) Adequate film about friendship and believing in yourself and all that stuff.
60 Diamonds Are Forever (1971) tt0066995 Feb 12 2018, 14:47 007 goes to Las Vegas to investigate the disappearance of diamonds in transit and discovers the involvement of his enemy Blofeld. Flows together rather well - great antagonists, good score and a suave old Sean Connery. The plot is especially jumbled, but it is an enjoyable Bond film.
60 Do The Right Thing (1989) tt0097216 Feb 02 2017, 18:17 It's the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing there, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal's delivery boy, manages to always be at the center of the action. There are some great things; as an example the nicely crafted, genuine feeling neighborhood. Also the suspense that seems to float in the air, waiting to explode.
60 End of Watch (2012) tt1855199 Mar 07 2017, 15:59 A drama centered on the long-term friendship and partnership between two cops. (imdb) Enjoyable and authentic cop film.
60 Eraserhead (1977) tt0074486 Feb 17 2017, 06:38 Henry Spencer's life spins out of control when conflict erupts in his strange yet simple world (imdb) Almost every event here is horrible to imagine; the creepy atmosphere amplifies this massively.
60 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) tt0338013 Feb 03 2017, 07:45 Joel (Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Winslet) has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Wilkinson), to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover his love for Clementine. (Focus Features) Good, humane film. The story can be predicted, but the style of "wandering around in one's memory" is great.
60 The Evil Dead (1981) tt0083907 Feb 01 2017, 07:24 Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. Some great effects here, but in the middle of the film there is a weird stalling period and therefore a loss of tension.
60 Exotica (1994) tt0109759 Sep 05 2017, 17:23 The 'Exotica' is a nightclub on the outskirts of Toronto, where Eric, DJ and MC, watches nightly as his ex-girlfriend Christina performs... (imdb) Nice atmosphere, like a nightly taxi ride mixed with an oriental score. The plot is secondary.
60 Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) tt0432283 Feb 01 2017, 03:52 Angry farmers, tired of sharing their chickens with a sly fox, look to get rid of their opponent and his family. So nice and decent, it's incredible that someone got this approved by a production company.
60 Fargo (2014) tt2802850 Feb 01 2017, 06:58 The all new "true crime" case of Fargo's new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota, where a young State Police Officer investigates a case involving a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate. (imdb) Very slick, modernized crime tales. -- Series 1 is better than the film, with a better protagonist and antagonist. The pacing could be faster. -- Series 2 is underwhelming and slow. The "shiny" optics don't fit well; most of the characters are unlikable or annoying. Not worth the time. -- I liked series 3 a lot more; it has uneven parts, but overall a great feeling of a "tightening noose".
60 A Fistful of Dollars (1964) tt0058461 Apr 29 2017, 05:29 A wandering gunfighter plays two rival families against each other in a town torn apart by greed, pride, and revenge. Enjoyable little film, carried by the unreachable coolness of Clint Eastwood.
60 Frantic (1988) tt0095174 Mar 09 2017, 08:32 A doctor and his wife go to Paris for a medical conference. While showering, his wife disappears. I don't remember a lot about this film, but I had a good time with Harrison Ford running through Paris(?).
60 The French Connection (1971) tt0067116 Jul 19 2017, 16:31 A pair of NYC cops in the Narcotics Bureau stumble onto a drug smuggling job with a French connection. (imdb) Acceptable crime film with an authentic style. - Especially one scene was interesting, where a french guy picks some kind of sea urchin from a tide pool and just eats it casually. Truly mind-boggling.
60 Full Metal Jacket (1987) tt0093058 Feb 06 2017, 19:33 The story of an 18-year-old marine recruit named Private Joker - from his carnage-and-machismo boot camp to his climactic involvement in the heavy fighting in Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive. [Warner Bros.] The beginning is very good and sets up the tension. Later you have intense moments, which were filmed amazingly stable and not overacted.
60 Funny Games (1997) tt0119167 Feb 01 2017, 03:25 Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement. (imdb) Unique with a great antagonist. Creepy and cold, like you know something bad will happen.
60 The Godfather: A Novel for Television (1977) tt0809488 Feb 07 2017, 17:53 The first two Godfather films were re-edited together in chronological order with additional footage added. (imdb) An epic, vigorous tale of the old days.
60 Goldfinger (1964) tt0058150 Mar 02 2018, 06:19 Investigating a gold magnate's gold smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve. The score is by far the best Bond score I have heard. The film gets better in the second half, but it only gets really exciting for a few short scenes.
60 Hamlet (1996) tt0116477 Feb 27 2018, 08:42 Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home to find his father murdered and his mother remarrying the murderer, his uncle. Meanwhile, war is brewing. (imdb) It was good, and I did not get too bored. The dialogue flows along very well.
60 Hard Boiled (1992) tt0104684 Feb 01 2017, 02:58 A tough as nails cop teams up with an undercover agent to shut down a sinister mobster and his crew. It gets dull after some time.
60 Her (2013) tt1798709 Feb 02 2017, 17:45 A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly-purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need. (imdb) Good protagonist, subtle futuristic design.
60 The Hurt Locker (2009) tt0887912 Feb 03 2017, 07:19 Iraq. Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb. (imdb) It stays intense all the way. Might rewatch because there were some nice scenes between the forced "character development".
60 I Saw the Devil (2010) tt1588170 Mar 27 2017, 03:07 A secret agent tracks a serial killer who murdered his fiancée. Good revenge thriller. It uses occasional physical and emotional violence, but it is never done unnecessarily.

(Sony) Appealing visuals and great score. But the story is linear and therefore could be told in a fraction of the time.

(imdb) Confusing and messy, which is funny at times in this film - but then other scenes are just stretching the patience too much. Overall not very rewarding.
60 Inland Empire (2006) tt0460829 Mar 29 2017, 06:27 An actress's perception of reality becomes increasingly distorted as she finds herself falling for her co-star in a remake of an unfinished Polish production that was supposedly cursed. Fuck you, Lynch!! Jump scares at 1:09h, 1:19h, 1:57h and 2:45h. Overall it's damn scary. Has "found footage" visuals, which is not as stylish, but works alright.
60 Into the Inferno (2016) tt4846318 Jan 14 2018, 04:33 An exploration of active volcanoes around world. (imdb) Good and interesting, with some amazing images. I can't blame the director for taking the opportunity to take a look inside North Korea; also, the documentary is worth watching for the footage from the Ethiopian desert alone.
60 Intouchables (2011) tt1675434 Feb 02 2017, 23:55 A true story of two men who should never have met - a quadriplegic aristocrat who was injured in a paragliding accident and a young man from the projects. (imdb) A film for the heart. Good but nothing more.

(Touchstone Pictures) Beautiful interior design and score, some funny scenes. Sadly the focus is on the tedious father/son drama.

His every waking minute has become an unremitting nightmare of confusion, paranoia, guilt, anxiety and terror - each of which is part of an escalating series of clues that will lead to the source of his mysterious affliction. During this, Neo must decide how he can save Trinity from a dark fate in his dreams. Part 1 of the sequel-double-feature. It is good, some scenes even great, but missing that special touch. -- You can watch this and Revolutions back to back, as they are basically one movie split into two.

60 Mississippi Burning (1988) tt0095647 Mar 17 2017, 04:46 Two FBI agents with wildly different styles arrive in Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of some civil rights activists. But Mr. Brooks has a secret -- he is also the notorious Thumbprint Killer and no one has ever suspected it -- until now. (MGM) The protagonist sells the whole film, he's enjoyable to watch. Worth a viewing.

David Lynch presents a Werner Herzog film. What the hell did I expect? It's hilarious and strange, but can get tedious just because of that.
60 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) tt0087544 Aug 25 2017, 11:02 Warrior/pacifist Princess Nausicaä desperately struggles to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet. (imdb) It was okay. Nicely drawn, a bit confusing, but with a child-like charm.
60 O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) tt0190590 Feb 03 2017, 08:01 A trio of escaped prisoners (Clooney, Nelson, Turturro) embarks on the adventure of a lifetime as they set out to pursue their freedom and the promise of sharing in the division of a fortune in buried treasure. (Touchstone Pictures) It was really comfortable and sometimes hilarious.

60 Rififi (1955) tt0048021 Feb 01 2017, 03:02 Four men plan a technically perfect crime, but the human element intervenes... (imdb) Parts of it are thrilling and awesome, the other parts not so much.

The protagonist is great, most of the other characters are just annoying. Excellent action at the end.
60 Rosemary's Baby (1968) tt0063522 Aug 07 2017, 17:27 A woman discovers that her pregnancy is actually part of a satanic ritual. (imdb) It was alright, but the ending was a bit too long. Even though the protagonist behaves like an idiotic child sometimes, at other times she notices things that even a vigilant viewer could miss - interesting.

60 Seven Samurai (1954) tt0047478 Feb 03 2017, 07:50 A poor village under attack by bandits recruits seven unemployed samurai to help them defend themselves. It is an epic tale of heroism, with great characters. Also a great fight where the bad guys don't go down easily. Surely a good film, but with problems in pacing.
60 Shutter Island (2010) tt1130884 Feb 03 2017, 03:51 Two U.S. Marshalls are sent to a federal institution for the criminally insane to capture a violent female escapee. One of the better psycho thriller(?) films.

(imdb) Dense and brutal atmospheric film with fitting score. Besides the bland lead actress, it was all done well with cool military precision.
60 Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) tt0458481 Feb 19 2018, 14:04 The town's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. (imdb) It was alright, although there was a large focus on the story line I liked the least.
60 Skyfall (2012) tt1074638 Jan 14 2018, 07:33 Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. It is okay, mostly because of Javier Bardem and his secret island hideout.
60 Snatch (2000) tt0208092 Feb 02 2017, 13:13 Guy Ritchie's highly anticipated comedy features a colorful ensemble cast in a rollicking ride through London's gangster world, its bustling diamond district and a rowdy gypsy camp. (Columbia Tristar) Pretty fun to watch.

While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. (imdb) Overall enjoyable. There were a few genuinely great scenes, but maybe the team should take a creative break for a few years...

(Sony Pictures Classics) Offers just enough to be interesting. Not amazing, just good, with a nice scenery.
60 Stalker (1979) tt0079944 Feb 02 2017, 17:50 Near a gray and unnamed city is The Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. It takes you in when you first watch it. It is required to have imagination and empathy for the protagonists; then you can feel a sense of wonder and excitement.
60 The Strawberry Blonde (1941) tt0034236 Mar 28 2017, 07:36 Biff Grimes is crazy about Virginia Brush, but his "pal" Hugo Barnstead marries her himself and makes Biff the fall guy for his shady dealings. Though Hugo seems to have everything Biff wanted, Biff learns that having what one wants and wanting what one has can be two very different things. (imdb) Light soap opera with witty dialogue. The scenery is portrayed nicely, and the film is pleasant for an afternoon.
60 The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) tt0134119 Feb 17 2017, 15:34 The 1950s. Manhattan lavatory attendant, Tom Ripley, borrows a Princeton jacket to play piano at a garden party. When the wealthy father of a recent Princeton grad chats Tom up, Tom pretends to know the son and is soon offered $1,000 to go to Italy to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return home. In Italy, Tom attaches himself to Dickie and to Marge, Dickie's cultured fiancée, pretending to love jazz and harboring homoerotic hopes as he soaks in luxury... (imdb) Captures the Italian lifestyle very well, also builds the tension nicely. All in all a good watch.
60 The Tenant (1976) tt0074811 Aug 06 2017, 07:17 A quiet and inconspicuous man (Trelkovsky) rents an apartment in France where the previous tenant committed suicide... It started very promising, and it delivered in the small pieces in between. But for such a masterful buildup, I was a bit let down by the ending.
60 The Terminal (2004) tt0362227 Mar 15 2017, 17:02 The Terminal tells the story of Viktor Navorski (Hanks), a visitor to New York City from Eastern Europe, whose homeland erupts in a fiery coup while he is in the air en route to America. Stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport with a passport from nowhere, he is unauthorized to actually enter the United States and must improvise his days and nights in the terminal's international transit lounge until the war at home is over... (DreamWorks) Comforting and easy on the viewer. I like airports.
60 Three Kings (1999) tt0120188 Feb 23 2018, 08:09 A small group of adventurous American soldiers (Clooney, Whalberg, Ice Cube, Jonze) in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War is determined to steal a huge cache of gold reputed to be hidden somewhere near their desert base. Finding a map they believe will take them to the gold, the soldiers embark on a journey that leads to unexpected discoveries, enabling them to rise to a heroic challenge that drastically changes their lives. (Warner Brothers) Chaotic and crazy war film with very dark humor. More than a poor man's Full Metal Jacket, but the ending was too implausible for me.
60 A Time to Kill (1996) tt0117913 Mar 26 2017, 17:32 A young lawyer defends a black man accused of murdering two men who raped his 10-year-old daughter, sparking a rebirth of the KKK. (imdb) Mostly forgettable court room film, but the ending is quite good. Really makes you question the US judicial system.
60 Zodiac (2007) tt0443706 Feb 06 2017, 05:28 As a serial killer terrifies the San Francisco Bay Area and taunts police with his ciphers and letters, investigators in four jurisdictions search for the murderer. The case will become an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues. Moves slowly forward, but I didn't find it boring. It doesn't overact anything.
50 3:10 to Yuma (2007) tt0381849 Mar 15 2017, 17:01 A small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher. (imdb) Too stylized for a real western - not only visuals, the performances and the camerawork too. It is a good film but nothing special.
50 Adaptation. (2002) tt0268126 Feb 19 2017, 16:52 The lives of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, author Susan Orlean and orchid poacher John Laroche become strangely intertwined as each one's search for passion collides with the others' in this adaptation of the best-selling "The Orchid Thief." If you like something "meta", then you will have great moments with this film. But overall it's too uneventful to be good on its own.
50 Blow (2001) tt0221027 Aug 21 2017, 16:39 A high-velocity look at George Jung's (Depp) spectacular rise and fall -- based on the true story of how powder cocaine turned into America's biggest drug problem and how one man from the blue-collar suburbs became the 35 billion-dollar a-year conduit to the Colombian cartels. Ted Demme directs this riveting look at the manic allure -- and dangerous reality -- of a drug smuggler's everyday life, and unfolds one of the great untold stories from the recent annals of American crime and culture. (New Line Cinema) Nothing special. Every aspect of this "drug empire rise and fall" film has been done better elsewhere (e.g. Goodfellas); acceptable but not good.
50 The Book of Eli (2010) tt1037705 Feb 09 2017, 11:38 A lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. I liked the wasteland design, and the protagonist is just right. The plot is unbelievably stupid. Actually I sided with the antagonist because what he said made a lot more sense.
50 Brazil (1985) tt0088846 May 05 2017, 15:33 Brazil is a surrealistic nightmare vision of a "perfect" future where technology reigns supreme. Everyone is monitored by a secret government agency that forbids love to interfere with efficiency. When a daydreaming bureaucrat (Pryce) becomes unwittingly involved with an underground superhero and a beautiful mystery woman, he becomes the tragic victim of his own romantic illusions. (Universal Pictures) The design is simply incredible. It's a shame that pretty much everything else sucks. The story is a mess, the protagonist is blunt and it feels too long.
50 Castello Cavalcanti (2013) tt3331512 May 06 2017, 09:43 Commissioned by the fashion giant Prada, it’s set in 1955 and stars Jason Schwartzman as a Formula 1 driver who crashes his car into an Italian village. Looks nice.
50 City of God (2003) tt0317248 Feb 11 2018, 11:20 Welcome to the world's most notorious slum: Rio de Janeiro's 'City of God.' A place where combat photographers fear to tread, where Police rarely go, and residents are lucky if they live to the age of 20. This is the true story of a young man who grew up on these streets and whose ambition as a photographer is our window in and ultimately may be his only way out. [Original Release 2002] (Miramax) I don't remember a lot about this film - uncertain if it is my or the movie's fault. I do remember that I was bored at times...
50 Collateral (2004) tt0369339 Feb 26 2018, 05:43 A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in LA. He must find a way to save both himself and one last victim. It was "meh", as far as I remember.
50 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) tt0190332 Feb 09 2017, 11:17 The disappearance of a magical jade sword spurs a breathtaking quest for the missing treasure. Li is embittered by the loss of his jade sword, and his unrequited pursuit of Yu is further complicated by the mysterious intrusion of an assassin. The identity of the assassin is gradually unveiled as another poignant tale of love begins to ravel with that of Li and Yu against the backdrop of Western China's magnificent landscape. (imdb) The fight scenes are godlike. The rest drags itself along terribly, especially the "poignant tale of love"(??). Decide for yourself.
50 Deadwood (2004) tt0348914 Apr 02 2017, 07:56 A show set in the late 1800s, revolving around the characters of Deadwood, South Dakota; a town of deep corruption and crime. (imdb) Great moments can be had - mostly in the first few episodes -, but it degrades noticeably towards the ungraceful ending.
50 Diabolique (1955) tt0046911 May 02 2017, 14:57 A man is killed by his wife and mistress, but his body disappears. What is going on? (imdb) The ending really is great, but overall the film takes too long to get going.
50 Encounters at the End of the World (2008) tt1093824 May 13 2017, 07:22 Filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica to capture its landscape's rarely seen beauty on film. It's alright, from what I remember.
50 Enemy (2014) tt2316411 Feb 16 2017, 13:16 A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie. (imdb) Starts very promising, but it's not reaching its potential at all - it's just a "smoke and mirrors" kind of film. Jake Gyllenhaal is great.
50 Enter the Void (2010) tt1191111 Feb 16 2017, 12:24 "Enter the Void" takes a hypnotic and hallucinatory trip through the eyes and mind of an American drug-dealer living in Tokyo with his sister. Nice idea, but the film is just too boring. The camera stays terribly long in one place, while I just want to see what's next.
50 Ex Machina (2015) tt0470752 Feb 08 2017, 11:19 Caleb, a coder at the world's largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world's first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl. (imdb) Never got really interesting, although it tried very hard to seem sophisticated. The ending is just big nonsense.
50 Film Noir (2007) tt0970933 Mar 01 2017, 01:49 Private detective Sam Ruben's clever plan falls apart with the onset of amnesia. Everyone is trying to kill him and he doesn't know why. The classic film noir milieu now comes to you in the form of an animated feature. (imdb) It tried something new, and failed. The animations are clunky and completely mess up the flow of the movie. Would have been much better with actors.
50 For a Few Dollars More (1965) tt0059578 Apr 29 2017, 05:32 Two bounty hunters with completely different intentions team up to track down a Western outlaw. Clint Eastwood is like a ray of sunlight to this film. Overall, too long and boring.
50 The Godfather: Part II (1974) tt0071562 Feb 03 2017, 02:02 The sequel to "The Godfather" continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Coppola tells two stories in Part II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. (Paramount) Drawn out and lengthy. There are great scenes, but overall it feels forced, like the filmmaker was indebted to continue the "saga".
50 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) tt0060196 Apr 29 2017, 05:36 Three gunmen set out to find a hidden fortune. Who will walk away with the cash? (imdb) It starts on the wrong foot (with an unnecessary recast). Unfortunately, the film does not get really interesting for the first 2 hours and 50 minutes.
50 The Great Wall (2017) tt2034800 Mar 20 2017, 10:39 A mystery centered around the construction of the Great Wall of China. (imdb) Really good action movie. It has face-melting epicness, some actually funny dialogue, and excellent faction design. The big problems are the hasty editing and the bland score - and of course some parts towards the end. Overall has some rough parts, but it's not bad.
50 The Green Inferno (2015) tt2403021 Mar 14 2017, 05:52 A group of student activists travel from New York City to the Amazon to save a dying tribe but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they protected. (imdb) Merciless ultra-violent horror. It is enjoyable, but many technical items like visuals and score are only mediocre.
50 Grizzly Man (2005) tt0427312 May 05 2017, 10:42 In his mesmerizing new film, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. (Lions Gate Films) It manages to remain interesting most of the time. Watchable, but way too long.
50 Headhunters (2011) tt1614989 Aug 02 2017, 18:03 Intense and entertaining thriller packed with twists and based on award winning mystery writer Jo Nesbo's novel, Headhunters' stars Aksel Hennie (Max Manus) as an elite headhunter who finances his lavish lifestyle by stealing art from his own clients. (tiff.net) It starts very promising, but then it goes downhill with the typical nordic absence of style and rather unemotional execution. It goes from 0 to bat shit crazy very fast, and some things feel sloppy and nonsensical.
50 Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) tt0102015 Jul 17 2017, 06:38 Documentary that chronicles how Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" was plagued by extraordinary script, shooting, budget, and casting problems--nearly destroying the life and career of the celebrated director. (imdb) Seen it, forgot most about it.
50 High Fidelity (2000) tt0146882 Jul 17 2017, 13:19 In this biting romantic comedy, Rob Gordon (Cusack) is the owner of a semi-failing record store in Chicago, where he sells music the old-fashioned way -- on vinyl. His needle, however, skips the love groove when his long-time girlfriend, Laura (Hjejle), walks out on him. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood. (Touchstone Pictures) I didn't feel entertained (except by Barry), but overall the film knows what it's going for.
50 I Stand Alone (1998) tt0157016 Aug 19 2017, 11:47 The Butcher (known from Noé's debut "Carne") has done some time in jail and now he wants to start a new life. He moves to Lille with his mistress. She promised him a new butcher shop. She lied. The butcher decides to go back to Paris and find his daughter. I think this is a wake-up call more than anything else. It certainly is no enjoyable experience, and might seriously disturb the sensitive viewer.
50 Incendies (2010) tt1255953 Jul 19 2017, 07:52 A mother's last wishes send twins Jeanne and Simon on a journey to Middle East in search of their tangled roots. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's acclaimed play, Incendies tells the powerful and moving tale of two young adults' voyage to the core of deep-rooted hatred, never-ending wars and enduring love. (imdb) Strong movie, but I don't enjoy misery porn that much.
50 Knock Knock (2015) tt3605418 Mar 13 2017, 16:11 A pair of femme fatales wreak havoc on the life of a happily married man. (imdb) It is memorable for its psychological "voyeur" horror, but I don't feel a strong connection to the film.
50 Lone Star (1996) tt0116905 Feb 20 2017, 18:44 John Sayles' murder-mystery explores interpersonal and interracial tensions in Rio County, Texas. Sam Deeds is the local sheriff who is called to investigate a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert....As Sam delves deeper into the town's dark secrets, he begins to learn more about his father, the legendary former sheriff Buddy Deeds, who replaced the corrupt Charlie Wade... (imdb) It has a heart, but most of the scenes and characters are really boring.
50 Lost Highway (1997) tt0116922 Mar 22 2017, 12:41 A jazz musician, tortured by the notion that his wife is having an affair, suddenly finds himself accused of her murder. In a parallel story, a young mechanic is drawn into a web of deceit by a temptress who is cheating on her gangster boyfriend. A drawn out, impenetrable mess. Is it all symbolic? Is it all just bullshit? Who knows?
50 Lucy (2014) tt2872732 Mar 07 2017, 11:18 Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) becomes the first human to use 100 percent of the brain's capacity. Great visual effects, but the story is a steaming pile of nonsense.
50 Magnolia (1999) tt0175880 Mar 31 2017, 10:37 On one random day in the San Fernando Valley, a dying father, a young wife, a male caretaker, a famous lost son, a police officer in love, a boy genius, an ex-boy genius, a game show host and an estranged daughter will each become part of a dazzling multiplicity of plots, but one story. (New Line Cinema) I'm not convinced that this is a "masterpiece". I found it too long, and some of the plots are simply not needed. I disliked the normalized visual style, and the momentum is all over the place.
50 Manhattan (1979) tt0079522 Mar 26 2017, 08:08 A divorced New Yorker currently dating a high-schooler brings himself to look for love in the mistress of his best friend instead (imdb) Uninspiring study about relationships.
50 The Matrix Revolutions (2003) tt0242653 Feb 09 2017, 16:29 The human city of Zion defends itself against the massive invasion of the machines as Neo fights to end the war at another front while also opposing the rogue Agent Smith. Part 2 of the sequel-double-feature. Loads of action, but no sense of miracle and destiny whatsoever; a truly botched resolution of the trilogy. Watch if you have seen Reloaded.
50 The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) tt1234548 Mar 17 2017, 06:07 A reporter in Iraq might just have the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady, a guy who claims to be a former member of the U.S. Army's First Earth Battalion, a unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions. Weird film, but forgettable.
50 Miller's Crossing (1990) tt0100150 Feb 01 2017, 03:09 A highly styled 'genre' film which can perhaps be seen as a pastiche of all gangster movies. Tom Reagan is the laconic anti-hero of this amoral tale which is also, paradoxically, a look at morals within the criminal underworld of the 1930s. Two rival gangs vie for control of a city where the police are pawns, and the periodic busts of illicit drinking establishments are no more than a way for one gang to get back at the other. Black humour and shocking violence compete for screen time as we question whether or not Tom, right-hand man of the Irish mob leader, really has a heart. (imdb) It is alright, but not worth more than one watch, maybe none at all if you are easily bored.
50 Moon (2009) tt1182345 Feb 02 2017, 23:57 Sam Bell is nearing the end of his contract with Lunar. He's been a faithful employee for 3 long years. His home has been Sarang, a moon base where he has spent his days alone, mining Helium 3. Creepy atmosphere, but doesn't keep the pace well.
50 New Kids Nitro (2011) tt2043932 Feb 28 2017, 07:36 Gerrie, Richard, Rikkert, Robbie and Barry from "Maaskantje" are in a big fight with the village of "Schijndel". When a zombie kills someone from "Brabant", things get out of hand. (imdb) A seamless continuation of the first film, but more confident with itself.
50 New Kids Turbo (2010) tt1648112 Feb 28 2017, 07:35 Five friends from 'Maaskantje' are getting fired because of the economic crisis. They decide that they won't pay for anything anymore. (imdb) Some funny moments, and it is refreshing to see something so unapologetic.
50 North by Northwest (1959) tt0053125 Feb 03 2017, 07:25 An advertising executive is mistaken for a spy and is pursued across the country while he looks for a way to survive. This one was alright, with good tension, but an off pacing sometimes. Also very predictable ending.
50 Oldboy (2003) tt0364569 Mar 25 2017, 10:50 Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and little daughter who, after a drunken night on the town, is locked up in a strange, private "prison." No one will tell him why he's there or who his jailer is. The imprisonment last for 15 years until one day when Dae-su finds himself unexpectedly deposited on a grass-covered high-rise roof, determined to discover the mysterious enemy who had him locked up. (Tartan Films) I didn't feel engaged in anything happening. Maybe it's the protagonist of the film, or the overall feeling that it gave me. I don't plan on watching it again.
50 Opera (1987) tt0093677 May 02 2017, 10:08 A young opera singer is stalked by a deranged fan bent on killing the people associated with her to claim her for himself. Nothing special. Watch Tenebre instead.

If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again. (imdb) Not really gripping or entertaining.
50 Prime Cut (1972) tt0069121 Feb 01 2017, 03:04 A Chicago mob enforcer is sent to Kansas City to settle a debt with a cattle rancher who not only grinds his enemies into sausage... (imdb) This is a standard good guy vs bad guy movie. Good antagonist.
50 Quantum of Solace (2008) tt0830515 Jan 14 2018, 07:32 Seeking revenge for the death of his love, secret agent James Bond sets out to stop an environmentalist from taking control of a country's valuable resource. A bit of a drag, and lacking in atmosphere.
50 Rear Window (1954) tt0047396 Feb 03 2017, 07:54 A wheelchair bound photographer spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder. Almost good. A likeable protagonist and intriguing story idea. But the execution is just too flat and boring.

50 Scarface (1983) tt0086250 Feb 03 2017, 03:36 In 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug empire while succumbing to greed. (imdb) Brute film, with the iconic 80's synthesized soundtrack. Many bland scenes, really not impressive.
50 Sherlock (2010) tt1475582 Jul 29 2017, 10:12 A modern update finds the famous sleuth and his doctor partner solving crime in 21st century London. (imdb) It used to be pretty good, but at the point of season 4 it is an unbearable, self-important piece of shit.
50 Split Second (1992) tt0105459 Mar 24 2017, 07:52 In a futuristic London, the rising sea levels mean that large areas are under feet of water. Hauer plays a cop who previously lost his partner to some strange creature. Now the creature is back and its after him. (imdb) Ragged 90s action. Barely enjoyable, has some nice scenes, but also a lot of the typical nonsense.
50 Spring Breakers (2013) tt2101441 Feb 16 2017, 03:38 Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work. (imdb) Very stylish, and easy on the viewer; the ending is quite qood. Honestly I don't know what to make of this movie.
50 The Sting (1973) tt0070735 Feb 03 2017, 01:55 In 1930s Chicago, a young con man seeking revenge for his murdered partner teams up with a master of the big con to win a fortune from a criminal banker. (imdb) It was alright, mostly because of the great Robert Redford.
50 Tombstone (1993) tt0108358 May 04 2017, 04:32 A successul lawman's plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona are distrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating (imdb) Not that great. Doc Holliday is legendary, but I didn't like any of the other protagonists. The "Best of Disney" soundtrack is a major flaw.
50 Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) tt0067893 Mar 08 2017, 11:54 Story of two men drag racing across the USA in a primer grey 55 chevy. Wilson is the mechanic, James Taylor is the driver. (imdb) It breathes life and follows closely the duel on the road. But it is also quite boring; there is nothing to rest your eyes on or to enjoy silently.
50 Unforgiven (1992) tt0105695 Feb 05 2017, 18:03 Two retired sharp-shooters and a would-be gunslinger team up to claim a $1,000 reward for killing two cowboys who brutally disfigured a prostitute. I like the motive of saving a prostitute's honor in the middle of the wild west. But it was quite boring to sit through.
50 Vertigo (1958) tt0052357 Feb 03 2017, 07:56 Complex story about a San Francisco detective and his psychological troubles with fear of heights and obsession over a woman.(imdb) At first I was captured by the film, but then it got pretty annoying in terms of resolving the plot.
50 Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) tt0497465 Feb 03 2018, 16:48 Two girlfriends on a summer holiday in Spain become enamored with the same painter, unaware that his ex-wife, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture. (imdb) The atmosphere is good, but the rest is rather meaningless, maybe driven by sexual attraction to the lead actresses?
50 Yojimbo (1961) tt0055630 Feb 02 2017, 06:57 A crafty ronin comes to a town divided by two criminal gangs and decides to play them against each other to free the town. (imdb) What makes it good is the grounded style. There is a genuineness to the protagonist that makes up for the lack of story.
40 The Act of Killing (2012) tt2375605 May 06 2017, 05:01 In this chilling and inventive documentary, the unrepentant former members of Indonesian death squads are challenged to re-enact some of their many murders in the style of the American movies they love. (tiff.net) This probably smashed at Sundance or Cannes or whatever, but I couldn't wait for it to end. Just so, so very long and dry. Seriously, fuck this cold, lifeless social commentary.
40 Adam's Apples (2005) tt0418455 Aug 20 2017, 17:08 A wickedly dark comedy about a middle-aged neo-Nazi sentenced to community service at a small, countryside church. I didn't find it funny at all, just very dark and terrible. Overall nothing to be excited about.
40 Blood River (2009) tt1137999 Feb 28 2017, 12:33 After a near-fatal car crash in the middle of the desert, Clark and his pregnant wife Summer walk to the nearest town, Blood River, in search of help. There they encounter Joseph (Andrew Howard), who offers his assistance, but tensions begin to mount as the couple’s relationship becomes strained leaving them vulnerable to Joseph’s sinister agenda... (Revolver Entertainment) The plot is shallow nonsense, everything else average at best. Tremendous runtime problem here - could have been a "not bad" 30-minute short film.
40 Branded to Kill (1967) tt0061882 Feb 02 2017, 11:20 The film's story centers on Hanada, a.k.a. "No. 3 Killer," the third-best hit man in Japanese organized crime... (imdb) It's a weird, meditating, sometimes cheesy film. The score is very well done. The rapid cuts, even within a scene, make it hard to grasp what is going on.
40 Breaking Bad (2008) tt0903747 Jul 18 2017, 10:05 A chemistry teacher diagnosed with a terminal lung cancer teams up with his former student to cook and sell crystal meth. I don't get it. Am I supposed to praise this series as the best TV production ever? It was alright, but as I recall, there were many rough spots. I even got bored/annoyed sometimes, but had nothing better to do at the time.
40 Candyman (1992) tt0103919 Feb 18 2017, 13:22 Helen Lyle is a student who decides to write a thesis about local legends and myths. She visits a part of the town, where she learns about the legend of the Candyman, a one-armed man who appears when you say his name five times, in front of a mirror (imdb) Never does more than being a standard low-intensity horror flick.
40 Castlevania (2017) tt6517102 Jul 12 2017, 17:00 A vampire hunter fights to save a besieged city from an army of otherworldly creatures controlled by Dracula. (imdb) Surprisingly bad. The animations are nice, but everything else is sub-standard and unsatisfying.
40 Cube (1997) tt0123755 Feb 09 2017, 11:33 Six people wake up from their daily lives and find they are imprisoned in a deadly maze. Slowly they discover that each holds a key to unlocking this diabolical puzzle. But as a mathematical formula for escape begins to reveal itself, the enemy rises from within themselves and survival is threatened by the same human weaknesses that created the Cube. (Trimark Pictures) Intriguing, but then loses momentum.
40 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) tt0421715 Feb 03 2017, 00:44 Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences. (imdb) I quickly lost interest when I noticed that the film would roll on for quite a while. It hits you over the head again and again with the love story/tragedy.
40 Dawn of the Dead (1978) tt0077402 Mar 30 2017, 06:01 Following an epidemic of zombies two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. Grounded survival film without unnecessary drama. But the bad editing ruins most of the charm and momentum.
40 Double Indemnity (1944) tt0036775 Feb 01 2017, 02:53 An insurance rep lets himself be talked into a murder/insurance fraud scheme that arouses an insurance investigator's suspicions. (imdb) It was alright, but not very memorable or interesting.

In a hospital a little girl with a broken collar bone meets a bedridden man who starts telling her a fantastical story which reflects his state of mind. As time goes by fiction and reality start to intertwine in this uplifting epic fantasy. (imdb) Couldn't bother to finish this. The intro was excellent, but the following hour just felt devoid of life or authenticity.
40 Forrest Gump (1994) tt0109830 Jul 17 2017, 06:34 Forrest, Forrest Gump is a simple man with little brain activity but good intentions. Forrest joins the army for service in Vietnam, finding new friends called Dan and Bubba, he wins medals, starts a table tennis craze, creates a famous shrimp fishing fleet, inspires people to jog, and more. (imdb) Found nothing great about this.
40 Gone Baby Gone (2007) tt0452623 Mar 19 2017, 19:34 Gone Baby Gone follows the explosive case of just one missing little girl. But inside this investigation lie secrets and a labyrinthine maze of class and corruption, evil and innocence...all leading up to one man's extraordinary choice in a world where right and wrong have become blurred. (Miramax) Uninspired and boring filmmaking, with equally shallow characters (i.e. Michelle Monaghan). The ending is alright.
40 Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) tt0187078 Feb 15 2017, 04:31 Car theft in Long Beach went down 47% when Randall "Memphis" Raines walked away from the life. He gets dragged back into it by assuming the job his brother Kip screwed up for stolen-car broker Raymond Calitri: steal 50 exotic cars and have them on a container ship by 8 AM Friday morning, and he got this news on a Monday. With Calitri threatening to kill him and Kip, and the police GRAB unit breathing down his neck, Memphis reassembles his old crew and attempts to pull off the logistically impossible. (imdb) Dialogue from a TV scrapbook, flashy camerawork and score, shallow story. But if you want mindless fun that requires a minimum of your attention, give it a try.
40 The Great Beauty (2013) tt2358891 Feb 03 2017, 00:53 The story of an aging writer who bitterly recollects his passionate, lost youth. A portrait of today's Rome. (imdb) The intro was pretty good, but then it just went downhill, and got very tedious. There is no meaning here whatsoever, so why watch it?
40 Hannibal (2013) tt2243973 Feb 01 2017, 03:53 Explores the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers. 40 Harakiri (1962) tt0056058 Mar 10 2017, 09:00 An elder ronin samurai arrives at a feudal lord's home and requests an honorable place to commit suicide. But when the ronin inquires about a younger samurai who arrived before him things take an unexpected turn. (imdb) Not that great. I was getting bored after the first 45 minutes. And the ending does not reward you enough for sitting through the tiring narration.

He plays guardian angel to unlucky John (Reilly) and a hooker, Clementine (Paltrow), whom he grows to love like family. When John's and Clementine's honeymoon night leads to a disastrous hostage situation, Sydney takes care of it, as usual. But when slick casino pro Jimmy (Jackson) threatens to reveal a secret from Sydney's past that could destroy his relationship with the newlyweds, Sydney decides to hedge his bets and not leave anything to chance. (Sony) Boring, uninteresting protagonist and story. Bad film.
40 Hot Fuzz (2007) tt0425112 Feb 03 2017, 00:32 In this action-packed comedy from the makers of "Shaun of the Dead," Nicholas Angel (Pegg) is the finest police officer London has to offer, with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He's so good, he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing -- the sleepy and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. A small village is about to get some big city justice. (Rogue Pictures) Did not find it funny, as usual with Edgar Wright.
40 Irrational Man (2015) tt3715320 Feb 03 2018, 16:50 A tormented philosophy professor finds a will to live when he commits an existential act. (imdb) Completely forgettable.
40 Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) tt0378194 Feb 01 2017, 02:39 The murderous Bride continues her vengeance quest against her ex-boss, Bill, and his two remaining associates; his younger brother Budd, and Bill's latest flame Elle. Not nearly as fun and exciting as Vol.1. Very lengthy at the end.
40 The King of Comedy (1983) tt0085794 Feb 24 2017, 19:24 Aspiring comic Rupert Pupkin wants to achieve success in showbiz, by resorting to stalking his idol, a late night talk show host who craves his own privacy. Not that great. The protagonist is a jerk who is sometimes hilarious to watch; but most of of the film didn't capture my interest.
40 The Living Daylights (1987) tt0093428 Feb 16 2018, 14:44 James Bond is living on the edge to stop an evil arms dealer from starting another world war. Bond crosses all seven continents in order to stop the evil Whitaker and General Koskov. Just a drag. Nobody looks like they give a shit, Timothy Dalton is not that great, the score is obnoxious; it would make a whole lot of difference if it was fun to watch.
40 Lost in Translation (2003) tt0335266 Feb 10 2017, 09:01 Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte, two Americans in Tokyo, cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life's possibilities. Would be an excellent short film. The length is a major problem; especially because Murray is not really convincing.
40 Magnetic Rose (1995) tt1530535 May 04 2017, 07:02 "Magnetic Rose" is about what happens when a deep space corporate freighter is called upon to investigate a distress signal from what ought to be a derelict space station. Disappointing and empty, won't watch it again.
40 Miami Vice (2006) tt0430357 Aug 03 2017, 04:58 The cocaine cowboys of the 80's are gone, but Miami's Casablanca allure, the undercover cops and the attitudes of Michael Mann's culturally influential television series have been enhanced by time in the feature film version of Miami Vice. (Universal Pictures) It's a bit staggering how anyone thought Miami Vice should be so grim and realistic; overall it is just a very bland and joyless experience.
40 The Negotiator (1998) tt0120768 Feb 01 2017, 02:55 Maverick negotiator Danny Roman is framed for embezzlement and the murder of his partner and best friend. A mess. Keeps you waiting for a big reveal, only to deliver more and more brainless "big man" talk.
40 The Neon Demon (2016) tt1974419 Mar 14 2017, 18:38 When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has. (imdb) Stylish like a fashion catalogue, but void of feeling or authenticity. Yes, that is the point, but then how should I care about anything that's happening in the film? - Also, fails miserably at being clever.
40 The Ninth Gate (2000) tt0142688 Mar 09 2017, 08:34 Dean Corso, known for locating rare books for wealthy collectors, is hired by a scholar of demonology to find the last two volumes of a legendary manual of satanic invocation. Parts of it are really meticulous, but other parts are boring/annoying/nonsense.
40 Rubber (2010) tt1612774 Feb 27 2017, 09:31 A tire is on his way through the desert to kill or destroy everything passing his way. At first it's only things or animals but then it's starting to kill people as well. Till he meets a girl he seems to be fond of. After sparing her, the sheriff wants to use her as a decoy to lure the tire into a trap. Could have been genuinely great, but the dialogue and production design was a failure. Maybe if they hadn't tried to be so smart (while being utterly shallow), they could have made a good film.
40 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) tt0446029 Feb 03 2017, 03:47 Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart. Overacted for comic purposes. It's just not that funny.
40 The Servant (1963) tt0057490 Feb 25 2018, 14:35 This film takes a sharp look at British class relations via a dramatic turning of the tables between a dainty Oxbridge twit bachelor (played by a young and dapper James Fox) and his contemptuous manservant (imdb) This film slipped my mind almost immediately after watching. More like a chore to endure and then move on.
40 The Skin I Live In (2011) tt1189073 Mar 23 2017, 08:55 A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. I don't like the Canal+ typical visuals and score; the story dragged itself along, but the reveal redeemed it somewhat. Overall, nothing spectacular.
40 The Social Network (2010) tt1285016 Feb 06 2017, 05:22 On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. Nothing special, with unlikeable characters.
40 Solaris (1972) tt0069293 Aug 05 2017, 13:03 A psychologist is sent to investigate the mysterious crisis which has occurred on board a space station orbiting a remote planet. Made me fall asleep.
40 Sphere (1998) tt0120184 Feb 05 2017, 17:59 A new dimension in thrills in the deep-water, deep-suspense sci-fi adventure centered on a spacecraft that plunged into the Pacific -- 300 years ago. (Warner Bros.) Not bad, but far from good. My biggest complaint is that it could've been more intelligent and sharp instead of playing it safe.
40 Youth of the Beast (1963) tt0057697 Mar 22 2017, 07:40 A violent thug plays opposing yakuza bosses against each other. (imdb) It has a nice look and feel, but I was just massively bored throughout. Maybe need to watch again some time.
30 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) tt0062622 Feb 02 2017, 06:45 A unique cinematic journey, "2001: A Space Odyssey" travels across enormous distances of both space and time. The story it tells is on the one hand about the collective adventure of human life on and off this planet. But it is also about something lying beyond the bounds of humanity, something lying in the true realms of the mysterious. If you manage to stay interested until the end, then you will have seen one of the shittiest endings ever made. The film is a mess, trying desperately to seem sophisticated.
30 Birdman (2014) tt2562232 Feb 03 2017, 00:14 A washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory. Highly overrated trash. No empathy for any character, the plot is going nowhere, you are left with dissatisfaction.
30 Blackhat (2015) tt2717822 Feb 01 2017, 02:41 A furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. (imdb) Forgettable crap.

We help with needs of kazakh knowledge and Us&a culture is positive step for future of our glorious nation. (20th Century Fox) It has some hilarious moments, although you know, deep inside, it is just a piece of crap.
30 Caché (2005) tt0387898 Feb 01 2017, 15:14 Georges (Auteuil), a television talk show host, and his wife Anne (Binoche), are living the perfect life of modern comfort and security. One day, their idyll is disrupted in the form of a mysterious videotape that appears on their doorstep. On it they are being filmed by a hidden camera from across the street with no clues as to who shot it, or why... (Sony Pictures Classics) Unsatisfying. The design is dry with many static ensembles, and there are some interesting and frightening ideas here.
30 Eyes Wide Shut (1999) tt0120663 Feb 18 2017, 17:01 A doctor, who is married to an art curator, pushes himself on a harrowing and dangerous night-long odyssey of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him. Infinitely boring and tedious. I developed complete disgust for the two main characters - and that is no good.
30 Fritz the Cat (1972) tt0068612 Feb 27 2017, 16:23 A hypocritical swinging college student cat raises hell in a satiric vision of various elements on the 1960's. (imdb) Sleazy, boring rubbish.
30 Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) tt1640459 Feb 10 2017, 10:05 A homeless vigilante blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun. Brightly colored, ultraviolent trash with terrible acting and score. Was probably made by a second year film student. -- With a more capable director, could've been a cult classic.
30 The Holy Mountain (1973) tt0071615 Mar 31 2017, 06:31 A Christlike figure wanders through bizarre, grotesque scenarios filled with religious and sacrilegious imagery. The constant, overblown symbolism made me roll my eyes. The "interpretations" are completely obvious attacks on religion/politics. - The whole thing is just a terrible art film; neither smart nor mysterious.
30 The Insider (1999) tt0140352 Feb 06 2017, 05:14 Balls-out "60 Minutes" producer Lowell Bergman sniffs a story when a former research biologist for Brown & Williamson, Jeff Wigand, won't talk to him. When the company leans hard on Wigand to honor a confidentiality agreement, he gets his back up. Trusting Bergman and despite a crumbling marriage, he goes on camera for a Mike Wallace interview and risks arrest for contempt of court... (imdb) Bloated and tedious to sit through. There's nothing to see here besides Al Pacino making phone calls.
30 Into the Wild (2007) tt0758758 Feb 02 2017, 05:15 Freshly graduated from college and with a promising future ahead, 22-year-old Christopher McCandless chose instead to walk out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people. Was Christopher McCandless a heroic adventurer or a naïve idealist, a rebellious 1990s Thoreau or another lost American son, a fearless risk-taker or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature? (Paramount Vantage) The protagonist is such a prick, and the narration so pretentious. The whole motive of the film is "guy runs away from home", but his smart talking should make you believe he is on a mission. Unfortunately, this film has not many things to say. Things get emotional at the end.
30 Now You See Me (2013) tt1670345 Jul 18 2017, 10:10 An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money. This film has almost disappeared from my memory, but I can faintly remember it as being bullshit.
30 Now You See Me 2 (2016) tt3110958 Jul 18 2017, 10:11 The Four Horsemen resurface and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet. (imdb) This film has almost disappeared from my memory, but I can faintly remember it as being also bullshit.
30 Psycho (1960) tt0054215 Feb 03 2017, 07:23 A young female embezzler arrives at the Bates Motel after stealing $40 thousand, which has terrible secrets of its own in the form of an odd proprietor and his domineering, never-seen mother. Did not grip me at any moment.
30 Shaun of the Dead (2004) tt0365748 Feb 03 2017, 00:37 This romantic zombie comedy follows the bloody funny adventures of underachiever Shaun and his best mate Ed as they cope with a zombie invasion of North London and attempt to rescue Shaun's girlfriend Liz and his Mum. It's going to be one hell of a weekend. Unfunny to an annoying degree. I know it's supposed to be a satire, but who cares when the satire is so bad?
30 The Tree of Life (2011) tt0478304 Mar 11 2017, 05:35 The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence. (imdb) There's a thin line between epic beauty and epic boredom...
30 Underground (1995) tt0114787 May 06 2017, 03:39 The story starts from an underground manufacture of weapons of Belgrade, during the WWII, and evolves into fairly surreal situations... (imdb) Couldn't bother to watch more than 55 minutes. Very off-putting and dirty.
30 Valhalla Rising (2010) tt0862467 Mar 30 2017, 06:08 1000 AD, for years, One Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor and together he and Are escape, beginning a journey into the darkness. Endless boredom awaits.
30 Zelig (1983) tt0086637 Feb 07 2017, 09:01 "Documentary" about a man who can look and act like whoever he's around, and meets various famous people. (imdb) The fake documentary was made with extreme effort. But it's overall very nonsensical and boring.
20 The Big Bang Theory (2007) tt0898266 Feb 03 2017, 00:41 A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory. (imdb) Terrible show. It tries so hard to have "smart" humour, and while failing at that, just feeds you usual sitcom bullshit (but with nerds lol!). The laugh tracks are used to an obscene degree.
20 The Core (2003) tt0298814 Feb 09 2017, 11:28 A wildly diverse team of professionals journey into unknown regions of the earth in the hopes of detonating a nuclear device which they hope will reactivate the earth's core and restore balance to the planet. (Paramount) You should lock every disc of this in an unobtanium safe and throw away the key. Waste of time. (hmm, this sounded funnier in my head..)
20 Doctor Strange (2016) tt1211837 Feb 01 2017, 06:51 A neurosurgeon with a destroyed career sets out to repair his hands only to find himself protecting the world from inter-dimensional threats. It is typical Marvel shit. It offers nothing but the shallowest of gags, the most standard Hollywood design, the overflowing action with rapid cuts. Although one sequence here was really impressive.
20 Evil Dead II (1987) tt0092991 Feb 08 2017, 13:47 Ash (Campbell), the sole survivor of "The Evil Dead," continues his struggle with the forces of the dead, with his girlfriend Linda. The two discover a mysterious tape recorder and hear the voice of Professor Knoby reciting passages from the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead. The professor's words invoke a spell that unleashes the spirit of evil alive in the remote forest surrounding them... (imdb) If the goal was to spit on everything the first film established, then well done. Unbearable bullshit.
20 A Serbian Film (2010) tt1273235 Feb 01 2017, 07:14 An aging porn star agrees to participate in an "art film" in order to make a clean break from the business, only to discover that he has been drafted into making a pedophilia and necrophilia themed snuff film. A film for voyeurs who are desensitized by the internet. Besides the infamous scenes, it's really boring and just delays time, because apparently they didn't know how to fill the non-shocking parts.
20 Strangers on a Train (1951) tt0044079 Feb 01 2017, 03:22 You'd like your wife killed, wouldn't you? I'll do it for you if you'll kill someone for me, and since we're strangers we'll be free of suspicion (imdb) Boring. It is really not enough to build a full-length film on 1 interesting scene.
20 White Heat (1949) tt0042041 Feb 01 2017, 10:46 A psychopathic criminal with a mother complex makes a daring break from prison and leads his old gang in a chemical plant heist. Shortly after the plan takes place, events take a crazy turn. The greatest amount of time is wasted with story that goes nowhere. The ending does not take a "crazy turn" at all, very disappointing. The score is terrible, it is blatant and obscenely loud. The protagonist as crazed gunslinger is quite interesting. Overall not worth any of your time.
